A TWENTY-SEVEN-YEAR old commercial sex worker, Nkechi Okafor, was brought to reckoning Monday as an Ikeja High Court sentenced her to six years imprisonment for murdering her client, Abiodun Sarumi.

Okafor was found guilty of manslaughter by the judge, Lateefa Okunnu, following the amendment of the charge from murder to manslaughter by the prosecution. The judge said there was overwhelming evidence that Okafor acted on impulse by stabbing Sarumi, but without intent to kill.

Okunnu also noted that Okafor’s defence for the act was not enough to exonerate her from the crime and therefore gave her a six-year jail term, starting from the time she was remanded in prison custody.

After the court pronounced her guilty, the convict, who broke down in tears, pleaded for leniency. She told the court that she was very sorry for what happened. Her counsel, Mrs. A. Onabolu, also pleaded on her behalf on the ground that the defendant was a first offender and a young woman in her prime, who had expressed sorry for what happened. However, the court did not heed the plea.

Okafor was first arraigned on March 16, 2012, on a one-count charge of murder. According to the prosecuting counsel, Olabisi Ogungbesan, the accused had on March 2, 2010, at about 23:30 hours at Nice Time Hotel, Old Ipaja Road, Lagos, killed her client, one Mr. Abiodun Sarumi, by stabbing him with a bottle on his shoulder, close to the armpit.

Sex worker bites off lover’s tongue

An Abuja Magistrates' Court has ordered that a 23-year-old commercial sex worker, Charity Achibong, be remanded in prison for biting off her lovers tongue.

Achibong appeared in court on a one-count charge of causing hurt; contrary to section 245 of the Penal code.

The police prosecutor, Clement Egwu, said that one Ephraim Okoronkwo reported the accused on July 9, at the Life Camp Police Station, Abuja.

He said that the complainant and the accused had a misunderstanding and heated argument in his room on the day of the incident; adding that Achibong jumped on the complainant in the midst of the argument and bit off his tongue.

According to him, the commercial sex worker tried to run away but was apprehended by a security official.

A contest over who was the rightful customer of an unidentified sex worker led to a clash between two communities in Ibese, Yelwa Local Government Area of Ogun,

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in Ogun, ASP Muyiwa Adejobi, who  confirmed the incident on Thursday, said the crisis started when two men disagreed over who the true customer of the woman was.

Sources said at least 30 articulated vehicles were still burning as at the time of visit, adding that several persons who sustained injuries during the clash had been taken to undisclosed hospitals.

The source said that three persons also lost their lives in the crisis.

However, Adejobi, who denied that three persons died, said that the crisis escalated because it was not well managed by leaders in the area.

A 20-year-old commercial sex worker,Miracle Ogbo, was recently, docked at an Oshodi Senior Magistrates‘ Court, Lagos, for allegedly stabbing her colleague on the face with a broken bottle.

Ogbo, who resides at  36, Oshodi Road, Oshodi, Lagos, pleaded not guilty to the one-count charge of assault.

The prosecutor, Cpl. Kehinde Olatunde, told the court that Ogbo, on May 28 at her residence, unlawfully stabbed her colleague, Uduak Okon with a broken bottle.

“During the day, both parties fought over the possession of a client but neighbours intervened and settled the matter.

“Ogbo, however, waylaid the complainant by 1 a.m. and stabbed her with a broken bottle on the face which caused her grievous injury, “Olatunde said.

Man dies during sex

Peace Idorenyin, a commercial sex worker in Cross River State, has been arrested by the police in connection to the death of Ete Samuel, 30, a resident of Calabar, who allegedly slumped and died on Sunday while having sex with her.

Samuel, who until his death resided at 14, Ekpo Abasi Lane in Calabar South, allegedly went with Idorenyin to a motel on Atu Street for an evening sex session before the incident happened.

The owner of the motel, who did not want his name published, said that he was drawn to the room when he heard a shout. “When I got there, I went into the room and saw a young man on the floor with foam coming out of his mouth and I called the police who came and took the corpse to the mortuary and the lady to Atakpa Police Station,” he said.

Idorenyin, when contacted, said she was not the cause of the death of Samuel, adding that this was not the first time they had sex. She said she noticed that Samuel was shaking and she thought he was about reaching orgasm, “but when he did not make any move of coming down from my body after some time, I pushed him and saw that he was foaming in his mouth.”
